Regional club championships - Lac d'Arques sunday 5th october 2008
Lezignan club COORE once again took home the men's and women's trophy, in both cases narrowly defeating teams from Toulouse Aerospatiale (TOAC).
In the women's race, first leg runner Helène Serrand built a big lead for TOAC ahead of COORE's Bénédicte Tisseyre-Bopp, but Audrey Duchassin pulled COORE back into the race, overtaking TOAC mid-leg and sending Gwenola de Miniac out 3 minutes ahead of Toulouse's Valérie Berger-Capbern. The cushion was enough to keep COORE in the lead, the winning margin just 30 seconds after 2 hours 50 minutes of running.
The men's race was even closer between the same two clubs. Vincent Picard on the first leg for COORE handed over to Jérôme Cavarroc about 20 seconds ahead of TOAC's Patrick Capbern. The second leg TOAC runner, 15 year old Loïc Capbern, set things up nicely for TOAC by launching Frédéric Portoleau with a three minute lead ahead of COORE's Steve Leconte. Anything could have happened to these two, and forty minutes later team-mates from the two clubs waiting at the spectator control were treated to the sight of Portoleau heading for the spectator control with Leconte at his heels. In spite of having his arm in plaster after a bike accident a few weeks previously, Leconte pulled clear heading up the hill on the last short loop to bring COORE home in first place a few seconds ahead of TOAC.
In the youngster's race (under 14s), with an encouraging entry of twelve teams, TOAC took first place just ahead of Montpellier. A mispunch deprived an RDPA team from Chalabre of 3rd place, but the second Chalabre team showed promise by coming 5th ahead of Lézignan youngsters.

National semi-final on the Plateau du Larzac - 6 april 2008
Not quite in the Aude, but not too far: the Languedoc-Roussillon regional association has scraped together enough money to bring you a new map on the Plateau du Larzac just next to the Bal des Rochers map at Caylar, with the same technical qualities if not better. Situated a few miles from the excellent areas for the French (Aveyron) 6 days (august 2008), the terrain is simply fabulous, beautiful rocky karst terrain, both very runnable and in places very complex, some of the best in France. Its first use for the national semi-final on 6th April 2008 will be a highlight of the 2008 orienteering calendar, not to be missed.  More information (in French) on the
Ligue Languedoc-Roussillon website, or contact ray.hulse AT orange.fr for details in english.

New permanent courses at the Lac d'Arques and Sougraigne
Work has begun installing the controls on several new permanent courses in the area.
The official inauguration of the new permanent course at the Lac d'Arques is due to be held at the end of May. The courses cover all levels, from beginners to elites (50 controls), on top quality orienteering terrain.
A small permanent course (10 controls) will also open around the Source de l'Eau Salée (Sougraigne): this course is designed to help visitors discover the hidden corners of this historical site, with most of the controls on features of historical or botanical interest. Two small park areas in Couiza are also due to be opened, essentially for use by the local schools.
